CIRCLE![]() Tracks: Sitting Bull / Arrows Of Love / Pemmican / Two Moon's Tango / When The Wind Is Blowing / Dance Of The White Man / Smoking Mountains / Long Tonque / The Great Plains / Pueblo / White Eagles / Smiling Pony / Man That Always Rides / Ohiniya / Good News / (Full Circle) Apache (from PIPELINE #47 - Spring 2000) Back in 1986 when we were still
searching for guitar instrumentals on in the vinyl racks,
"Full Circle" by The Chief was a surprise
release on the mainstream Polydor label. An even bigger
surprise was the quality of this all-original set which
Rarity have thankfully now made available on CD.
Supported by bass, drums and a little keyboards, Henk
Haanraads is the guitarist responsible for this stirring,
melodic album that's full of great emotive themes. Such
is the quality that no less a talent than Lenny Clerwall
covered three of the tracks on The Spacemen's "In
The Wild West" CD. What greater recommendation can I
possibly add? This is fabulously stirring stuff, an
essential purchase for all UK/Euro guitar fans and a
strong contender for the album of the year 2000. (Alan

FOOLIN' AROUND![]() Tracks: Whole Lotta Shakin' Goin' On (v), Drivin' Up The Hill (v), Mona Lisa (v), Yellow Jacket, Little Sister (v), Teen Scene, Rendezvous '62, Flyin'Saucer Rock & Roll (v), Don't Leave Me Now (v), One Night (v), The Rise And Fall Of Flingel Bunt, Shake Rattle And Roll (v), Lipstick On Your Collar, Classic Boogie, Oh Pretty Woman (v), Donna (v), Send Me Some Lovin' (v), Ajoen Ajoen, Foolin'Around, Traditional Guitars (Auld Lang Syne-Grandfather's Clock-Red River Valley-My Bonnie-Sarie Marijs-Quartermasters Stores), When I Found Love (v), Memphis Tennessee (v), Tennessee Waltz (v) (from NEW GANDY DANCER #39 - January 1994) 23 pretty fine vocal/instrumental workouts here from old friend Paul Selier and his new group. Sleeve threw me a bit with the Ventures model Mosrite guitar since none of the cuts sound like Mosrite to me. It's all very Shadows and lower European guitars and very professionally put down. Five peice band who settle in neatly to a variety of good old R&R interspersed with some useful Selier original songs including the title track which is strong. The standards are treated respectfully and there's nothing wrong at all with The Hunters and The Ventures tributes. Ajoen Ajoen is probably the best cut but the Trad Guitars Medley deserves some attention. (Davy Peckett) (from PIPELINE #21 - Winter 1993/94) With Paul Selier handling the lead guitar duties you just know that this is going to be a high class project. His gear for these recordings included Fender: Stratocaster / Telecaster / Jazzmaster guitars, twin reverb / Vibroverb amps, Vox: Tube echo and AC30 amp, Roland RE 301 and Watkins Copicat delays, plus a Morley volume pedal. There are 14 competent and joyable vocals in English from the fifties rock songbook, but it's the instrumentals that we must focus on. There's a welcome punch in the delivery of Ajoen Ajoen and a notably listenable cover of Flingel Bunt. The medley takes in the likes of Red River Rock and My Bonnie before closing with Quartermasters Stores whilst Classic Boogie also follows a traditional theme. Yellow Jacket luxuriates in a beautifully deep and rich guitar sound played with great fluidity and Teen Scene rings oput nicely too. Also from The Hunters song (tune) book is Lipstick On Your Collar in a stirring performance but sadly there are just the two Selier originals to savour. Foolin' Around is a rockin' rockabilly piece with deep-throated guitar that boogies along apace. By contrast, in tempo at least, is the ballad Rendezvous '62 with its echoes of melodies and styles from that (innocent ?) era. A great exercise in nostalgia without abvious plagiarism or corn. There are some good reasens to add this to your collection then, but whether there are enough for the 100% instrumental perve is debatable. (Alan Taylor) |

"CLASSIC" GUITAR SOUNDS (fully instrumental CD)![]() Tracks: Always In May, Wild Geese, Last Date, Good Times/Bad Times, Spring Is Nearly Here, South Of The Border, Afrika, Theme From "The Persuaders", Round And Round, Walk Don't Run, In The Mood, La Comparsa, Riders In The Sky, Amapola, Apache, Early Morning Twist, So You're In Love, Never In Time, Runaway, Johnny Guitar, Midnight (from PIPELINE #27 - Summer 1995) Phew, copying those titles was a real effort as the small red print on a blue background makes them almost unreadable! Anyone finding this CD in the racks may give up trying work out the track list, but they would be in danger of missing out on an excellent all-instrumental set. The Classics are a guitar four-piece led by our old friend Paul Selier and so you'll know that you're in for some tasteful treatments of the popular titles here. His guitar cascades eloquently through Last Date, catches the beautiful simplicity of Spring Is Nearly Here and powers through emotionally charged Theme From The Persuaders. Neat touches like the rock & roll opening to Round And Round and the Pipeline riffs that introduce Walk Don't Run help spice up the arrangements but we're still talking genuine 60s stylings here. A word of praise is due to Lex Slijk, Frank Hofland and Hans Kijzerwaard for their work on rhythm, bass and drums respertively. Their stylish playing helps set the 60s scene perfectly. Frank also provides the jaunty original Never In Time and, although elsewhere's it's covers all the way, some are not so obvious. Sonny Curtis'So You're In Love makes a fine guitar ballad and Colin Pryce-Jones' classic Early Morning Twist is an unusual choice. Africa is a super rendition of The Jumping Jewels version, the melodic and strongly rhythmic Good Times, Bad Times comes from Hans van Eijk and Wild Geese hits the old emotion button as powerfully as it did the first time I heard it from another of Paul's former DSR labelmates The Fellows. To open the show The Classics have picked a Lenny Clerwall title, the expansively descriptive Always In May, a quality start to a quality set that closes tastefully on Midnight. With fine versions of such Euro classics as La Comparsa, Johnny Guitar and Amapola mixed in along the way, this is an enjoyable and well thought-out album where the sum of the titles delivers more than you might expect by taking them individually. A very pleasant hour's worth of guitar magic from The Classics. (Alan Taylor) |
