STORY OF ... DANNY & THE ELECTRO STRINGS![]() Tracks: Gonzales, Gee Whiz It's You (v), Evening Glow, We Say Yeah (v), Spanish Eyes, Forty Days (v), Una Aventura Mas, The Lonely Bull, Misty, goldfinger, Bonzo, Along The Navajo Trail, Sweet Barbara Hanna, Dark Man, Shanty, Namrekka, More Than I Can Say, Before Dark, Summernight Dreams, Say It With Music, Second Street, Round and Round, Gipsy Woman, Las Tres Carabelas, Mexican Bodega, Sleepwalk (from PIPELINE #17 - Spring 1993) The front cover is a vintage early
sixties shot but don't be fooled, these are "modern"
recordings - only ten years old in fact! Danny & The
Electro Strings' first release was the EP Tribute To
Cliff & Shadows with the six tracks that open this CD.
I have to say that the singing is superb, only the
language is a slight problem. Their other solo release
was an EP for Rocker in 1983 which led off with Goldfinger
and Bonzo. Like all of the 23 instrumentals
here, they are strong melodies and equally strong
performances. Solid bass and drum work support the rich
lead guitar sound and it's great to hear a real rhythm
guitarist filling things out nicely. Aurally the only
problem is a digital hitch on Say It With Music where
a note or two are lost after 13 seconds of play.
Elsewhere everything is fine and it's a pleasure to
listen to, if you like your instrumentals to be Shadows
influenced then look no further. The track selection
helps, there are no originals but on the other hand very
few overworked titles. Half a dozen tracks are associated
with The Shadows but none were singles, the other
selection are drawn from Australian, South African and
American sources in addition to European product. (Yes, Namrekka
is Akkerman backwards!) This is one classy CD, apart from
the vocals you'll be happy to play it as a whole rather
than track skipping your way through it. This is due in
no small part to the quality of the material, the closest
this CD sinks to corn is on Misty. Listen out
too for a '57 Strat through an AC30 and Bison echo as you
enjoy another fine CD from Rarity, congratulations to
them and well done Danny & The Electro Strings (Alan

DESPERATES![]() Tracks: Desperates Express, My Girl Josephine (v), It'll Be Me (v), Little Geisha, Sally Was A Good Old Girl (v), Wait And See (v), Cosy, You Never Can Tell (v), I'm Ready (v), Moonshot, Hello Catharina (v), I'm In Love Again (v), Black Eyes Rock. Brush Those Tears (v), Smokey Mountain Boogie (v), Snoertje Van Bloedrode Kralen, You Win Again (v), Sweet Little 16 (v), Second Street, Rocky Road Blues (v), Little Queenie (v), Geronimo, It Keeps Rainin' (v), I Want You Yo Know (v), La Comparsa (from PIPELINE #29 - Winter 1995) 25 new recordings by The Desperates comprise this first Rarity CD from a band that goes right back to 1961. The nine guitar instrumentals are evenly spread amongst the (Berry, Domino, Vincent etc.) rock & roll vocals so there is a pattern of one instro to every two vocals. Indo-rock is represented by an evocative La Comparsa, a lovely slow Black Eyes Rock that finally bursts open after three of its four minutes, and the lightweight jollity of Snoertje Van Bloedrode Kralen. Shads fans will be impressed by the mood captured on Geronimo and a really startling Cosy that leaps out of the speakers and grabs you like the bear-hug of a lost friend. Moonshot retraces The Spotnick' launch of three decades ago while Second Street will be familiar to Lenny Clerwall and 1961 fans, they opened their Convention with it in '95. Little Geisha is Wheels with balls but still rather impotent which leaves the opener, Desperates Express. The only original track, it obviously has its origins in Shadoogie and is delivered with enough punch to merit its title. (Alan Taylor) |

LET'S ROLL! Tracks: Let's Roll (v), Dardanella, Take These Chains From My Heart (v), Runaway, We All Get Lucky Sometimes (v), Moon Of Manakoora, Let's Chase Each Other Around The Room (v), Honky Tonk, Jealous Heart (v), Morgen, Just Call Me Lonesome (v), Al Capone, Excuse Me (v), Once, Someday (v), Ram-Bunk-Shush, Rock Little Baby (v), Mr. Sandman, Now's The Time To Fall In Love (v), Hurricane Beat, Shackles & Chains (v), Wheels, Sea Cruise (v), Terang Boelan, I'm Gonna Sit Right Down & Write Myself A Letter (v) (from PIPELINE #44 - Summer 1999) With 25 tracks alternating vocals and instrumentals we get a full dozen guitar pieces to savour. While the vocals are in a rockabilly / rock & roll style, the instros mix Dutch Indo with American RI. The one oddity is a jog-along version of Mr. Sandman. The Indo hits are all competently delivered, the American numbers being more distinctive as the band are coming at them from a slightly different angle. Only very slight mind you, as The Desperates slip quite comfortably into standard RI mode just as they move smoothly from rockin' to flowing Indo instro guise. Morgen sounds great, Moon of Manakoora too, but best is their feisty Runaway with an echoey metallic edge to the guitar. (Alan Taylor) (from NEW GANDY DANCER #56 - June 1999) Hunters'
style twangy guitar on a dozen goodly instrumentals of
Indo Rock style plus a dozen more poppy vocals from an
experienced band. Strong production values and playing
from The Desperates who excel when playing either pop
rock like Runaway or meaningful ballads like the
lush Moon Of Manakoora or Morgen. Honky
Tonk and Ram Bunk Shush swing and are worth
listening to. Al Capone is a muted guitar-led 12
bar at almost four minutes. Congratulations to Rarity by
the way - this is theit 135th album in their catalogue.
Not many labels can rival that especially when most of
them are in instrumental terms. (Davy Peckett) |

CD 192442 THE
DYNAMIC ROCKERS (feat. John Spencer) vol. 1![]() Tracks: The Razmataz Polka, Pretend (v), Move It (v), Joey's Song, My Maria (v), Woo Hoo, Just One Time (v), Anna, Dear One (v), Breakfast Polka, Fall In Love (v), Once, Lonesome Old House (v), Italian Love Song, I Love You So (v), 18th Century Rock (from PIPELINE #19 - Summer 1993) The Dynamic Rockers date back to the Dutch scene of 1961 and feature John Spencer, aka Henk van Broekhoven. These recordings date from some 20 years later when interest in the old music promted their reunion, the results originally appearing on CNR and Dureco Records. Unlike many such acts, their vocals are remarkably successful with John in fine voice and also in total command of the English lyrics. There's a sensitive reading of Cliff's Fall In Love and an excellent Move It, the best cover version of this classic that I can recall. Instrumentally they steer clear of Shads material (do I hear sighs of relief out there?), poaching a couple from The Spotnicks, two from the States, and looking the traditional/classical inspired pieces like Italian Love Song and 18th Century Rock. They go for a little more bite on The Spotnicks pieces Anna and Joey's Song with a similar sound on the two polkas. Perhaps the most surprising selection is Woo Hoo, even more a surprise is that it sounds so good! This 50:50 mix of instrumentals and vocals is recommended to those with a penchant for a hint of country in their rock (Alan Taylor) |
