(from PIPELINE #51 - Spring 2001)

Every so often I come across one of those poor souls, usually fanatical about one of the US stylings, who casually dismisses the Euro instro as being so much the weaker of the two relatives. Next time I shall forcibly sit him (or her) down and make them listen to this CD. Seldom have I heard the Euro sound delivered with such vigour, such excitement, and such power. The Invaders clearly have this music running through their veins, and anyone not moved by the intensity of these live performances should immediately check for a pulse.
So who are The Invaders? Mainly they're fans just like us, fans who have toiled at their craft over the years until now they are close to perfection. In his notes drummer P O Alm rightly gives credit to guitarists Kurt Froberg and Tom "Rocker" Olsson, together with bassist Rolf Fardigh, for the excellence of this set. But it is his own towering contribution on drums that provides the drive and spark that ignites the band into flame.
No surprises in the track listing, it's the crème de la crème of the European and UK instros, however the live setting and the sheer class of the musicians really does add something new to each of the titles. On "Nivram" for example, P O uses sticks instead of brushes and the tune takes on a brand new swing; while "Golden Earrings" is taken at a marginally slower tempo than usual which emphasises the haunting beauty of the melody, and with Kurt Froberg wringing every shred of emotion from his guitar it really is a heart-stopping performance. Likewise for "Saturday Night At The Duckpond" which just rocks superbly. "Peace Pipe" is as poignant and moving as ever and "Trambone" with Tom Olsson's delicious Spotnicks sounding lead work is an absolute joy.
This is the kind of CD to put on when you're feeling down - it carries such a buzz that it will have you smiling and tapping your foot approvingly in moments!
My advice is to buy this CD immediately, and then make absolutely certain that you see The Invaders performing live at the Pipeline Convention on Easter Sunday. Opportunities to hear music this wonderful and bands this good do not come everyday. (Dave Burke)
