It's becoming a bit of a cliché isn't it but, yes, here's another absolutely fantastic Finnish instro band! What The Charades have done for sound of The Ventures (injecting a fresh sparkle and a little young muscle) so Little Bee are doing for the Euro Shads-based sound. Remember when The Shads really used to rock'n'roll? Well, put on 3^rd Rock From The Sun and prepare to be blasted! In reality it's more like The Shads meet Chuck Berry, but such attack, such dynamics, such joie de vivre! Knockout! Wheel & Deal is just as good, a sneaky, almost spy-sounding, theme which creeps up on you and instills itself in your mind until you're humming it all day long. There it goes again! Forbidden Games is more traditional in its approach; a rather stately theme, moodily echoed with a solid walking bass line and firm beat; it very much reminds of the path their compatriots The Mustangs are pursuing so successfully. Then there's The Good, The Bad & The Ugly given a whopping beat by drummer Mika Kulmala and powered along by bassist Michael Chzech, who between them give the number a real sense of drama.
On Satellite Theme it's time for guitarist Juha Pitkakari to shine with his cleanly rolled rhythm, while lead guitarist Jarno Tiihonen lets rip with some fiery lead lines on a number that suggests The Ventures In Space album. Perez Prado's catchy Guaglione is given a bright upbeat treatment which can't fail to please, while Theme For Lifetime Lovers gives the band an opportunity to relax with its dreamy, gentle melody. Not for long though, as we immediately slam into Escape From Surf City which has us back on the beach with its beaty Pipeline pulse and glissando slides.
After more breathless excitement with Drum Like A Moose, featuring some neat percussive fills, and the ever popular Sabre Dance (who needs Love Sculpture?), we reach another melodic oasis with Maritza. A highly pleasing mid-paced number with some beautiful playing from Jarno Tiihonen, its romantic and gentle yet not without a subtle strength. Beat The Rap picks the beat up with venom, while Lines Are Hot and Right Now, Off The Bat continue the energetic thrust, and really the pace just doesn't let up right through to the closing Tsunami with its headlong rush of molten guitar licks.
Wow! It's all beautifully produced, sounds great from start to finish, and Little Bee are clearly a new force to be reckoned with. It must be something in the water. Dave Burke

The Lowlanders started way back in 1966 and have stayed together ever since. Now, 32 years on, they finally get the chance to record their first album. It comprises a mix of familiair titles and some rarely items like ZZ & De Maskers' Spanish Tears and Tamara. It's Spanish Tears that kicks the CD off and the first impression is of a Spotnicks feel but, as the set progress, the Shadows and Dutch Indo influences emerge. This guarantees an emphasis on melody and rhythm, with the flowing ballad style of specialty. Punchier numbers like Kon-Tiki and Flingel Bunt are delivered with a rounded sound rather than aggressive bite, but they do provide variety. Clearly recorded "one-take" in the studio. The Return Of The Lowlanders is not a clinically perfect album but more of a "live" experience. Not that the sound quality is anything but excellent, it's just that we're talking about a group of four musicians and not an attempt at computerised perfection with its (almost) inevitable sterility. This is one for the guitar sound enthusiasts who will lap it up. (Alan Taylor)

The Lowlanders are a guitar four-piece who use an additional rhythm track to help fill out their sound. We thus get rhythm/second guitars in the left and right channels with the lead taking centre stage. The lead sound has a light metallic ring to it that's quite individual. There's an element of Shads about it, Spotnicks too, but all credit too The Lowlanders for being just a little bit different.
The recordings are fine soundwise but are clearly one-take jobs so you don't expect perfection in the playing. It has the air of a demo performance about much of it that some may find charming, on classics such as The Frightened City. This makes it one for the really dedicated UK/Euro guitar instro collector only. (Alan Taylor)
