Mike Maxfield
CD 192629 GUITARS IN MOTION

Tracks: Mustang / Rock On / Eldorado / Guitars In Motion / Mystique / The Cruel Sea / San Jose Highway / Midnite Flier / Spectre / Surfing Crazee / Linaria / Buddy / The Millionaire / Hurricane / Do You Like Rock 'n' Roll? (v) / Blackpool Rock / Spirit / Spartacus / Mason Dixie / Redneck

(from PIPELINE #50 - New Year 2001)

This is a real turn up. From out of the blue come two great CDs from one of Britain's finest guitarists and composers. Guitars In Motion originally saw the light of day in 1985 when it was issued as a 14 track cassette. Then, as now, it comes as a real breath of fresh air to instrumental collectors. In addition we also have all four tracks from Mike's '86 Do You Like Rock'n'Roll EP and a further two previously unissued cuts!
All the tracks are written by Mike and include fine new versions of his classics The Cruel Sea and The Millionaire. Basically all bar the two final tracks feature the standard guitar, drums and bass line-up with keyboards being used in a fairly restrained manner, Mike himself adding second guitar where necessary. The whole thing sounds great and Mike is on sparkling form throughout.
The title track has a jaunty feel and a nice quirkiness about its melody which makes it a real standout, whilst Eldorado is a proud sounding brisk-paced ballad and Mystique a more gentle piece of mood music with keys providing a string-like background. Surfing Crazee has a very catchy little theme, busy bass, and a drumbeat that makes you want to dance. Buddy is obviously a tribute to Holly featuring snatches of Heartbeat and Peggy Sue whilst Linaria is a tender love theme much aided by an acoustic sounding rhythm guitar and Mike's plaintive lead work. Spectre features a similar recurring bass line to The Beach Boys Sloop John B while Mike entwines a moody guitar line with a distant synth to great effect.
Hurricane is very much in The Cruel Sea vein with Mike demonstrating his dexterity with a speedy mandolin-like middle-eight. This technique, Mike's speciality I guess, also turns up in Blackpool Rock which features more of a dark-toned lead with a powerful electric rhythm guitar making it another standout. Spirit bears a family similarity to Blackpool Rock with more of that great rhythm sound which is fine by me; whilst Spartacus features loads more nippy lead guitar work as well as a memorable melody. Knockout CD.

CD 192630 TRIBUTE

Tracks: Mike Maxfield: Memphis / FBI / Rumble / The Mexican / Duane Eddy Medley / Trambone-Windy And Warm (electric guitar version) / Apache / Ventures Medley / Gandy Dancer / Guitar Boogie Shuffle / Telstar / Trambone-Windy & Warm (acoustic guitar version) / Wipe Out / Love Me Tender / The American Trilogy / Sitting On The Top Of The World
Vintage: Out Of The Shadows / Pipeline / Midnite Flier / El Dorado

(from PIPELINE #50 - New Year 2001)

If that wasn't enough we also have an entire album that Mike recorded in the eighties which was never released! Tribute is basically Mike tipping his hat to all those great original sixties instrumentals that we all know and love so well. But this is no casual run through of old faves, take a listen to the blistering guitar on Memphis and Steve Gilbert's pounding drums as the Maxfield crew take Lonnie's original close to the finishing line. Likewise, FBI is given a subtle change of rhythmic emphasis and a more pronounced drumbeat which gives the old warhorse a fresh lease of life. The Mexican too has a fresh lick of paint and a sudden new energy, and listen to Mike's wailing guitar at the track's fade. The Duane Eddy medley nicely blends together Rebel Rouser and Peter Gunn and then rounds off with Shazam in a suitably dramatic and twangy way, whilst The Ventures medley performs a similar job on Walk Don't Run, Blue Moon and Lullaby Of The Leaves all taken at an energetic, driving pace, which is then followed by an excellent full-length reading of Gandy Dancer. There is also a choice of electric or acoustic lead on two versions of Trambone and Windy And Warm which merge together very well and are equally impressive.
Extra tracks at the end of the CD are separate to the original album, fairly straight version of Elvis' Love Me Tender and American Triology, the latter with a big production job and, by contrast, a jazzy Les Paul-ish version Sitting On Top Of The World which works very well indeed. The CD rounds off with four very fine tracks from Vintage, the Manchester based Shadows styled band. The connection with Mike is that he not only produced the tracks but also composed three of them. It all adds up to another knockout job I'm afraid. You'll just have to buy the pair!                         Dave Burke

The Mustangs
CD 192609 THE LOST ALBUM: FOUND AND REVISITED

Tracks: The Tale / Catcall / Trombi (#2) / Tide / Southern Slinger (alt. mix) / Twit / The North Pole / Rattlesnake And Clock / Boogie Tree / Japi-Beat / Dust The Magic Carpet / More Candy / Emiko (alt. mix) / 13th Ride / Fullmoon Lullaby / Trombi (#1) / Deep As Sea (Syvä Kuin Meri) / Dewdrop And Snowflower (Kastehelmi Ja Lumikukka) (alt. mix) / The Beast Of Mindshuria / Man From Nowhere (live) / The Cruel Sea (live)

(from PIPELINE #48 - Summer 2000)

The story behind these recordings and how this became as The "Lost" Album is detailed in the sleeve notes by Dennis Roos. Suffice it to say here that most of the recordings were originally started in 1995 and completed last year. Matti Luhtala is at the helm providing his tasty lead guitar and all 17 of the original compositions. But The Mustangs' sound is not just lead guitar, and Jari Aaltonen, Jarmo and Markku Tuominen are on hand to provide rhythm, drums and bass respectively.
These are not outtakes or leftovers but fully-fledged Mustangs recordings: a 15 track album plus six bonus cuts. They have that classic Mustangs Rautalanka sound that first emerged from Finland 20 years ago on a series of vinyl EPs. None strike you straight away as instant hits, but after a couple of plays they soon bed down as familiar favourites. There's a high proportion of uptempo pieces amongst them and the 15 hang together very nicely as an album. For the uninitiated it's early '60s Shads with tons of real rhythm guitar and an edge to lead sound that hints at a 1960/65 cross with just the slightest touch of Spotnicks about it. Twit is typical of their style with a decent melody cleanly picked out on a tastely echoed lead over a strong, unified rhythm section featuring guitar, bass plus plenty of snare and cymbal. Although nothing shines, this is a consistently good set with not a single duff track in sight.
For the bonus tracks, Trombi #1 has a hints of surf from a second guitar and Deep As Sea is a fast ballad with more of a Spotnicks feel. Dewdrop And Snowflower rings out with a driving rhythm as does The Beast Of Mindshuria though here the melody is less convincing. The two final tracks show that they can cut it live too, and the searing lead on The Cruel Sea is a great way to finish a very fine CD. (Alan Taylor)

(from NEW GANDY DANCER #59 - Summer 2000)

The Mustangs appear for the first time on a full CD album for Rarity and as usual, they are a strong twanging band. They have a guitar sound that whilst it has echoes of The Shadows inevitably, it is more like the very early sixties UK and Scanrock style of maybe The Fentones, Cougars et al. Their material varies from the sensitive ballad stuff like Tide to what could be out and out surf in another band's hands like Trombi. Their material therefore works on several levels. The group are Matti Luhtala (lead); Jari Aaltonen (rhythm); Markku Tuominen (bass) and Jarmo Tuominen (drums) and whilst the guitars take the kudos, a tip of the hat to Jarmo for some crisp drumming much like the technique of Tony Meehan. The group have been amazingly, in existence for two decades now and yet we still see them as one of the newer younger bands! This fine and before now unreleased set is 17 Matti Lutala instrumentals and a few bonuses. Fans will love it and they should pick up new friends at the same time. (Davy Peckett)
